Looks like humans are not the only ones who appreciate the convenience of Amazon Alexa. A parrot in the UK has “fallen in love” with his owner’s Echo and has used Alexa to order treats and play his favorite tunes.
Rocco, an African grey parrot, was taken in by the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) earlier this year after being found as a stray.
He was quite the mischievous and foul-mouthed bird, according to NAWT. He swore regularly and threw his water bowl around, but NAWT staff member Marion Wischnewski agreed to re-home him.
He soon forged a friendship with Wischnewski’s Amazon Alexa Echo assistant and has ordered treats such as strawberries, watermelon, raisins, broccoli, and ice cream.
Rocco has also demanded a kite, light bulbs, and even a kettle.
“Rocco and Alexa chat away to each other all day,” Wischnewski told The Sun. “Then I have to check the shopping list and cancel all the items he’s ordered.”
According to Wischnewski, Rocco also likes to dance and would tell the voice-activated device to play music. His favorite? Rock music, although he would also play “slow numbers.”
“Often I come home from being out all day and find romantic music playing,” Wischnewski said.
The African grey parrot has the reputation as being the best talker of all parrot species, according to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Not only do African grey parrots mimic speech, but they mimic it in a voice that sounds quite human. They are also known to imitate sounds with incredible accuracy, from dripping faucets to construction equipment.
