Last of the Summer Wine actress Jean Fergusson has died aged 73, according to reports.
Though Fergusson is best remembered as Marina from the hit series, she also played Dorothy Hoyle on Coronation Street later in life.
Fergusson’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed, though her agent reportedly broke the news over social media.
Born in Yorkshire, the actress launched her career on the hit British sitcom in 1985, playing local supermarket worker Marina.
The co-op checkout girl famously had a long-running affair with her married neighbour Howard, played by Robert Fyfe.
Howard would send his pal Norman Clegg to pass on romantic notes to his secret love interest, behind his wife’s back.
His wife Pearl Sibshaw (Juliette Kaplan) would treat Marina with contempt, suspecting Howard strayed.
After leaving Last of the Summer Wine in 2010, Fergusson went on to play Dorothy Hoyle on Coronation Street for a year.
Back in the 80s and 90s, she had taken bit-parts in the ITV soap, playing Gary Mallett’s mother and Dr Lowther’s sister-in-law.
Playing Dorothy, her major plotline on the show involved a dramatic kidnapping with her husband Alan (John Stape) and Chesney Battersby-Brown (Sam Aston).
On top of her screen career, the starlet was a familiar face on stage and regularly took part in pantos and comedy theatre productions.
Once news of her death broke, tributes came flooding in from fans and admirers up and down the country.
On Twitter, one said: “So sad to hear the news that Jean Fergusson has passed – a wonderful actress, a glorious fairy in pantomime, and a friend, so very sadly missed – Bless you, Jean.
A second added: “Jean Fergusson, you will be missed.
